Football clubs are often judged by league tables.

Sometimes, though, their greatest achievements happen long before kick-off.

Originally released in April 2018, this conversation with Steve King shines a light on one of the most important parts of Sutton United that many supporters rarely get to see.

At the time, the Community Disability section was only four years old.

It had begun with one simple ambition. Create a Sutton United disability team. That was the dream.

By the time we sat down to record this episode, that dream had already grown into three thriving teams competing at different levels of disability football, with players representing a huge range of disabilities and abilities.

Listening back now, it’s remarkable to hear how many of Steve’s ambitions have since become reality.

Throughout the conversation, one thing becomes obvious.

This was never simply about football.

Steve explains that every player deserves the opportunity to play, regardless of disability. Whether someone is chasing national honours or simply enjoying the game for the first time, the objective is exactly the same. Create an environment where everyone belongs.

That philosophy still feels like Sutton United.

We also discuss the competitive side of disability football, something many supporters may not fully appreciate.

The teams weren’t simply turning up for a kickabout.

They were competing in county leagues, producing England trialists, welcoming former England internationals into the coaching setup and, incredibly, preparing for a national FA People’s Cup Final at St George’s Park.

Steve’s pride is obvious throughout.

Not because of trophies.

Because of the people.

Again and again he returns to the same message. Every player has their own story, every player has overcome challenges and every one of them inspires those around them.

The conversation also captures a fascinating moment in Sutton United’s wider development.

The 3G pitch had transformed the club into a genuine community hub. Disability football, girls’ football, walking football and countless other activities suddenly had a permanent home. Steve explains just how much the facilities allowed the club to grow, bringing together people of every age and ability under one badge.

Looking back with the benefit of hindsight makes that discussion even more interesting, knowing how the club would later face difficult decisions following promotion to the Football League.

There are lighter moments too.

Steve laughs about representing Sutton United on the Wembley pitch before the FA Cup Final, admits his singing probably wasn’t his strongest performance and reflects on what remains one of the proudest days of his life.

It’s impossible not to smile listening to someone whose enthusiasm for Sutton United is completely genuine.

Perhaps that’s why this episode still resonates.

Yes, some of the details belong to the spring of 2018.

Fixtures have been played.

Finals have come and gone.

The teams have continued to grow.

But the values at the heart of the conversation haven’t changed.

Opportunity.

Inclusion.

Community.

Belonging.

This is one of those episodes that reminds us Sutton United has always been about far more than the first team.

It’s about creating a place where everyone can wear the badge with pride.

That’s a message that never goes out of date.
