Some footballers become legends because of the trophies they win.

Others become legends because of the way they represent a football club.

Originally released in July 2018, this conversation with Craig Dundas captures one of Sutton United’s greatest servants at a fascinating point in the club’s history. Dundo had just celebrated his 500th appearance for Sutton, the club had narrowly missed out on promotion to the Football League, and nobody could have imagined what was still to come.

In fact, this episode became something of a time capsule.

Listen Here

It was the final Sutton Podcast before an unexpected break of more than three years. When the podcast eventually returned, it took Sutton United’s promotion to the Football League to produce an interview I felt could top this one.

Listening back today, it’s easy to understand why.

Craig speaks with the humility that made him such a popular figure around Gander Green Lane. Despite reaching 500 appearances, he never presents himself as the star of the story. Instead, he talks about the dressing room, the volunteers, the supporters and the culture that made Sutton United feel different from every other club he’d played for.

One comment, in particular, stands out.

When asked what makes Sutton special, Craig points straight to the atmosphere around the club. Everyone knows their role, everyone contributes and, from the volunteers to the chairman, everybody pulls in the same direction.

That simple observation probably explains as much about Sutton United’s success as any tactical analysis ever could.

Of course, we also revisit some unforgettable moments.

Craig reflects on winning the Isthmian League, promotion from the Conference South and the incredible FA Cup run that culminated in facing his beloved Arsenal. Injured for the tie itself, he watched from the sidelines, but still describes it as a reward for everything the club had worked towards over so many years.

There’s plenty of humour too.

We discuss supporter chants, his famous mural at the ground, teammates he’d love to play alongside again and his remarkable physical transformation that saw him return fitter than ever after one summer of relentless hard work.

It wouldn’t be a Craig Dundas interview without talking about commitment.

He explains how extra training during the off-season helped extend his playing career, while making it clear that there were never any personal milestones in mind. His only focus was helping Sutton United continue progressing.

Listening with the benefit of hindsight adds another layer to the conversation.

At the time, Sutton were preparing for another National League campaign. Promotion to the Football League still felt like an ambitious dream. Craig talks about believing it was possible because that’s what sportspeople do, even when the odds seem against them.

Three years later, that dream became reality.

There are also moments that perfectly capture Dundo’s standing within football. Former teammates still spoke about him with huge affection, supporters regarded him as one of the club’s greatest modern players and even beyond Sutton his name was recognised for one unforgettable World Cup challenge that briefly made him a viral talking point.

This episode is more than an interview with a club legend.

It’s a snapshot of Sutton United before the biggest chapter in its history had even been written.

The Football League hadn’t arrived. Wembley was still to come. Promotion was still a dream rather than a memory.

But listening back now, you can hear many of the values that eventually carried Sutton there.

Humility.

Hard work.

Loyalty.

Team spirit.

If you’ve never heard this conversation before, it’s a wonderful introduction to one of Sutton United’s most iconic players.

And if you listened when it was first released in July 2018, I think you’ll appreciate it even more knowing what both Craig Dundas and Sutton United achieved in the years that followed.
